If you recognize Craig Scheer than you’re probably not alone. A member the California Cougars indoor soccer team and more than handful of professional squads in over 25 years of soccer, Scheer has certainly made his name in the sport. But he’s taking that dedication and work that got him to the next level to Fitness 360 with one goal in mind; helping his clients get to their own next level! A native Midwesterner, Scheer has an abundance of personal knowledge and training from his years in the gym and on the field – something that he looks forward to not only helping out the youth of Stockton but also giving all his clients a personal touch to help reach their goals.
You’ve been a professional soccer player… how has playing at a level like that help you transition into personal training?
I played as a youth throughout high school, got a scholarship to play in college and was a three-time all-American at University of Illinois Springfield. I then got drafted into the A-League where I played three years there and then played in Belgium for a few months. I came back to the US and played indoor for eight professional seasons. Through all that I was in the gym constantly, lifting, running, doing plyometrics to stay at a high level of competition. Every year you’re always fighting for your contract. So when I was young I was fighting the old guys and now as I’m older I got younger guys coming in so I had to stay at a peak level of performance.
From there I started doing soccer camps and started working with kids. That spun off into doing personal soccer training on my own and that in turn transitioned into me working out and training their parents. They knew my background in fitness and wanted me to work one-on-one with them. After being in Stockton I met Ben, we started talking and that got me into 360.
What would you say is your area of expertise?
I would say I’m good with sport specific exercises like speed, change of direction – anything with coordination. I’m knowledgeable about that just because I’ve done it for so long and know a lot of exercises that can improve those areas. But also, I’ve trained myself in the gym so anyone that wants something specific can come to me with that and I have a great idea of what to do.
There’s always going to be an opportunity to progress, no matter what age or level that you’re at. It’s just a matter of how big of steps you can take. If you haven’t done anything for years it’s going to be a slower progression. But if you’re already an athlete we can still take you above and beyond.
What’s an average training session like?
I enjoy super setting. Hitting lots of exercises on the same body part over and over. Then I like to always have a core exercise. It’s also good to have 30-second cardio, jump rope or whatever mixed in. Anything that’s going to keep the heart rate up.
What are your thoughts about Fitness 360?
I think it’s a very positive place. It’s a great place to workout because people are getting great personal attention. You don’t have to deal with a huge gym where there are going to be a lot of distractions. You can come in here; it’s like a tight, family atmosphere where you can get your workout done without being bothered. As far as a workplace it’s a very healthy environment. You’ve got all the top equipment, you’ve got knowledgeable trainers. You can come in here, knock out your workout in an hour. You get it done and move on. You’re here with someone pushing you that knows what you need to do to get the results your looking for. I think that’s something that people struggle with and that’s not a problem at Fitness 360.
