He may not have taken the same path as his clients. He might be older or younger or have a different outlook on fitness and health but one thing is certain of Desmond Macnamara and his clients – they all want what he has… a hunger for fitness. Desmond’s introduction into Fitness 360 brings someone many people can recognize with. Being at a certain stage in your life and realizing that you want to be better, lose weight, be healthier – he just went out and found a way to get that done; and in doing so created a following in friends and family and now clients that turn to him to have him change them the way he changed himself.
Talk a little bit about your background with fitness and athletics.
Well I usually played baseball and basketball as well as skiing and watersports. I never played collegiately but I was always very active. I grew up in Stockton but once I was married I moved to Arizona and started learning more about fitness and that really started with basketball; learning new drills and staying in shape that way.
And your transition into personal training and fitness?
When I moved back to Stockton I started dating a girl and I kept gaining weight each year that we were together. Eventually we went our separate ways and when we did I lost 15 pounds right away; I got back into being fit and that was really nice. I dropped that weight and instead of being 190 I was trim and able to run on the basketball court. Then I started looking into bodybuilding and strength training and did a lot of reading and educating along with that.
People just started asking me what I was doing and then that turned into asking me if I could train them. I started taking them through a few programs in which they would see some gains. I only kept the dedicated people and was doing it on my own so I never really thought about how great it would be to do something like this here at Fitness 360.
What’s your most knowledgeable area?
I’m very knowledgeable in interval training; high intensity training and fitness. Regardless of the fitness level you are at you can still apply those things. I’m big on keeping the lean body mass and a program that has a lot to do with core performance. That’s something than anyone who’s looking to get stronger and leaner would benefit from.
What is your favorite part about personal training at 360?
I look forward to having people reach their goals. It’s fun to have people say, “here’s what I want” and then in 4-6 weeks start to see those results. That makes me feel good. It’s not a farm and it’s not a big box gym. You’re taking a small number of clients that are here because they want to be here. They don’t stick with you at big places. But here at 360 we can be more personal with our clients. Personal training is 90% personal and 10% training. With this studio it seems very true.
What’s a session with you like?
Well if you’re working with me than you’re going to get pushed. I mean you’re not going to get hurt… well, maybe you will. But in a good way! You’re going to feel tremendous worth in a sense that you’re building towards something. You might complain but you’re going to see the results.
